What to consider

Compare affordability and full borrowing costs. Approval is a lender decision.

Who can help?

Banks, credit unions, lenders and authorized brokers. This describes a provider type, not a confirmed DebtHelpers partner.

Questions to ask

  • What is the APR and total repayment?
  • Are there fees, optional extras or prepayment terms?

SEE THE TRADE-OFF

A smaller payment can cost more.

Imagine two offers to borrow the same $10,000. Here is what the payments alone add up to.

$80 less each month. But $3,360 more repaid overall.

Three things to have handy

  • 1How much you need and what it is for
  • 2Income and existing payment commitments
  • 3Your questions about the loan term and costs

Borrowing for an expense is different from managing existing debt

A personal loan adds a repayment commitment. Explain whether you want to fund a purchase, cover an expense or combine existing balances. If you are already struggling with payments, it is also worth discussing repayment support rather than assuming another loan will solve the problem.

Ask for the full cost in writing

Compare the amount received, payment schedule, interest, fees and total repayment. If an asset secures the loan, understand what happens to it if payments are missed. Do not judge an offer only by its advertised payment.

Will a lender run a credit check?

Most lenders check credit for a personal-loan application. DebtHelpers does not perform a credit check in this form; that is not a promise of no-credit-check borrowing. A provider would explain its own application requirements.
