Stuck in overdraft in Canada? Find the gap between paydays

Your pay arrives, the account briefly turns positive, and the next few bills put it back below zero. The useful question is not just how to clear overdraft today—it is why it returns.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Review a full pay cycle, including interest and account fees. Distinguish a one-off timing problem from spending and required payments that consistently exceed income. Increasing the overdraft limit does not close a recurring gap.

Find the price of staying below zero

Overdraft protection is borrowing. Costs can include interest and monthly or per-use fees, depending on the arrangement. Your institution may require repayment within a specified period. FCAC distinguishes basic overdraft protection from arrangements linked to another credit product; read the terms for the product actually attached to your account.

A payday balance can hide the problem

Hypothetical example: the account is $350 overdrawn before a $1,700 pay deposit. The deposit leaves $1,350 available. If necessary spending and scheduled payments before the next payday total $1,500, the account returns to minus $150 even before new fees or interest.

The deposit reduced the old overdraft, but the next cycle still does not balance. A larger limit would create more borrowing room, not more income. Write down the lowest point in the cycle as well as the balance on payday.

Separate timing from a repeated shortfall

Make two versions of the next pay cycle. First, keep all dates unchanged. Second, move only the payments whose billers have actually agreed to a different date. Compare the lowest balance in each version. If timing changes remove the dip, track the following cycle to see whether that holds. If both versions remain negative, the amount owed or the ongoing budget needs attention.

Compare a repayment change, not just another limit

If you discuss replacing overdraft with another credit product, ask for the total repayment cost and the required payment on your actual pay dates. Keep essential spending in the calculation. For broader debt pressure, a credit counsellor can help review a budget and repayment options; ask about services and fees before enrolling.

Does overdraft count as available savings?

No. An available overdraft limit is access to borrowing, not money you own. Keep it out of the savings column when you work out what you can afford.
