The publicly stated service models
Credit Canada describes free counselling and financial guidance. The Credit Counselling Society describes free counselling, education and debt-management support. These statements identify the kinds of conversations each offers; they do not prove that your debts qualify for a particular plan.
| Organization | Official website | Stated focus |
|---|---|---|
| Credit Canada | creditcanada.com | Counselling, budgeting and debt guidance |
| Credit Counselling Society | nomoredebts.org | Counselling, education and debt-management support |
Give both the same starting information
Use one debt list and one realistic budget. If one conversation includes a joint debt and the other does not, the quoted payments are not comparable. Ask each organization to identify assumptions and debts outside the suggested plan. Include your preferred contact method and any accessibility or language needs when checking availability.
Compare the written plan, not just the first impression
Request an itemized payment explanation, fees, creditor participation, duration and the procedure if your income changes. Ask what ongoing support is included and how payment problems are handled. A friendly first call matters, but it does not answer those operational questions on its own.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which debts stay outside the plan? | Your household still needs to manage them |
| What fees are included? | A free conversation is not every subsequent service |
| What if a creditor declines? | Participation should not be assumed |
| How do I change or leave the plan? | Circumstances can change during repayment |
Our take: fit is more useful than an invented winner
We have not attended appointments or compared proposals for a real client, so we do not assign a score or declare a winner. A practical choice should be supported by a plan you understand and can sustain. If neither conversation resolves an unsustainable budget, ask about an assessment of other appropriate options.
Prepare for a conversation
- An identical debt list for both conversations.
- Current service availability for your province.
- Written costs and the full proposed payment.
- Ongoing support and what happens if the plan becomes unaffordable.
