The practical difference
FCAC distinguishes hard enquiries associated with credit assessment from soft enquiries such as checking your own file. Do not infer the type from the speed of an online form or from the word “quote.” Ask the organization to name the check and explain when it happens.
| Question | Hard enquiry | Soft enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Can it affect the score? | Yes | No |
| Typical example | A credit application | Checking your own report |
| What to clarify | Which application action triggers it | Whether a later stage includes a hard check |
Ask before the application stage
Write down the provider’s answer to three questions: which bureau is used, what kind of check is made and whether submitting to multiple providers creates multiple applications. A comparison platform and a direct lender may have different roles. Read the permission wording on the actual application rather than relying on an earlier advertisement.
If an enquiry looks unfamiliar
Check the date and business name against applications or account changes you remember. If you cannot explain it, use verified bureau and lender contact information to investigate. Disputing an unauthorized or inaccurate entry is different from requesting removal of a valid enquiry simply because you dislike its effect.
What happens in the DebtHelpers form
This form does not retrieve your report or run a hard or soft credit check. It records the type of guidance or enquiry you choose. A later application with a provider is separate and may involve its own checks. You should be able to understand that next step before giving the provider permission.
Prepare for a conversation
- The organization making the check.
- The check type and bureau.
- The stage at which the check happens.
- Whether you are agreeing to more than one application.
You do not need account numbers, a SIN, banking credentials or uploaded documents to start our enquiry.
Is prequalification the same as approval?
No. Treat an indicative result as conditional unless the provider clearly explains otherwise. Verify the remaining checks, documentation, terms and any expiry before relying on an offer.
