BC has its own garnishment framework
The Court Order Enforcement Act sets wage exemptions and exceptions, including rules that differ for maintenance obligations. The ordinary percentage alone is not a complete calculation: minimum protections and the kind of order matter. A callback request does not suspend a garnishing order or court deadline.
Separate a collection complaint from a repayment decision
Consumer Protection BC provides information about collection conduct and consumer rights. Keep the creditor name, account records and communications when raising a concern. Disputing conduct and deciding how to repay are separate tasks; neither should be described as automatic debt cancellation.
Before choosing help in British Columbia
Separate an urgent court deadline from a general request for repayment guidance. Bring the original notice and agreement, not just a monthly balance. Ask which rules apply to your creditor and whether the professional can advise on the specific procedure involved.
Prepare for a conversation
- List creditors and whether each debt is secured.
- Keep any court or collection notices and their deadlines.
- Prepare income, essential expenses and current payment commitments.
- Ask who is qualified to advise on the specific procedure.
